Questão 62104

FATEC 2002
Inglês

(FATEC - 2002)

Dr. Steven Marans:

Talking to children about violence

Dr. Steven Marans is the head of the National Center of Children Exposed to Violence at Yale University's Child Study Center. He joined the CNN.com chat room from Connecticut.

CNN: Dr. Marans, this incident has presented many challenges for parents and teachers. Can you give us some guidance as to how much we should be talking to kids about these events? Won't it greatly depend upon the age of the child?

MARANS: Yes, it does depend on the age of the child. But perhaps the most important issue is that children need to have adults who are available to listen to what is on their minds. That it is the greatest importance that teachers and parents are able to demonstrate to children that they can tolerate hearing about all sorts of ideas and strong feelings. Parents and teachers need to listen carefully to their children in order to understand the issue that are uppermost in their children's mind.

The other issue is that for all of us, children and adults alike, there is no great fear than that of losing someone that we love. And that there is no greater fear than being frightened of damage to one's own body or to the body's of people that we love.

Assinale a alternativa que apresenta o uso gramatical correto de "there is".

A

There is few teachers and parents talking to the children.

B

There is some children who need help.

C

There is a lot of frightened adults after the attack.

D

There is many events happening at the same time.

E

There is much anger among people in New York.

Gabarito:

There is much anger among people in New York.

Resolução:

Utiliza-se "there is" com um substantivo singular contável e todos os substantivos incontáveis e "there are" com substantivos contáveis no plural.

A) INCORRECT: pois, por "few teachers" estar no plural, deveria ser utilizado "There are".

B) INCORRECT: pois o sentido de "some children" é de algo passível de ser contado (é possível contar quantas crianças precisam de ajuda), isto é, a countable noun. Logo, como some children indica algo no plural, deve ser utilizado a forma "There are".

C) INCORRECT: pois mesmo não sendo possível saber com precisão quantos adultos estão assustados por causa do ataque, é necessário utilizar a forma no plural, ficando "there are".

D) INCORRECT: pois "many events happening" é um termo no plural, devendo ser concordado com "there are".

E) CORRECT: O verbo there to be (haver=existir), foi utilizado no singular (there is) para concordar com o substantivo incontável “anger”, uma vez que este está no singular e não é passível de ser quantificado.
