MEET THE BRAZILIAN  BEATLES (AGAIN)

Os Mutantes, magical tropicalistas, back to blow your mind.

1In this era of nationally televised talent shows and test-tube-baby bands, magic is surely lacking in pop. Yet Sérgio Dias, 55, guitarist and founding member of influential Brazilian ensemble Os Mutantes, uses that word - "magic" - repeatedly, apropos of the group's decision to re-form after three decades.

An air of the unexpected always surrounded Os Mutantes. In the late 60's, the band - Dias, brother Arnaldo Baptista, and Rita Lee - were seminal figures in the Tropicalia movement. Os Mutantes fused psychedelic rock with elements of bossa nova, and the mere use of electric guitars found them branded heretics at home; 2the inclusion of such oddities as a can of aerosol bug spray for percussion on their eponymous 1968 debut intensified their aura of weirdness. 3But that experimental spirit ensured their place in history, with Beck, David Byrne and Kurt Cobain ranking among their fans.

Such endorsements were not lost on Dias, who has continued playing solo since Os Mutantes' final dissolution in 1978. "When you see the people who shape opinions, 4listening to music that you made 30 years ago, and praising it, that is when you know the music doesn't really belong to you. It has a life of its own". As to Os Mutantes' sustained popularity, he attributes it primarily to their youthful exuberance, and "the freedom that we had, the freshness of not being held by any preconceived ideas or A-B-A music forms. We were very, very free... and we still are".

In 2006, Os Mutantes performed live for the first time since 1973, at the Barbican in London, as part of a Tropicalia retrospective. Yet, according to Dias, at first he and Baptista were as surprised as anyone else to hear of Os Mutantes' involvement. "Suddenly I started to receive news from the theater administrator that I was going to play again in London", he recalls.

Initially, the brothers denied the rumors. But then they began to consider the possibility, and roped original Os Mutantes drummer Ronaldo "Dinho" Leme into the discussion. "Dinho is a very serious, down-to-earth person", insists Dias. 5"When he said, 'if they want us to play, I can play', I knew this was the real thing".

Dias attributes heightened excitement within the group to new addition Zélia Duncan. "When we restarted Os Mutantes, we were thinking of a girl", says Dias. The guitarist remembered Duncan, whom he'd met and immediately liked when both of them were participating in a mutual friend's recording project. "I thought of Zélia, and I told the guys. And they said, 'Wow... but her voice is so different.' But the most important thing in a band is not the quality of the voice, in terms of texture, but the interaction between the people. Zélia is so strong and alive. When she got into the rehearsals, and started to sing, the energy of the band doubled".

That electricity manifested itself at the Barbican and, one hopes, will continue through the band's handful of U.S. summer dates. A DVD and CD of that show are currently in production. And that may be only the beginning of a new era for Os Mutantes.

YOUNG KEEP IT SIMPLE IN HIGH-TECH WORLD

LONDON (Reuters) - 8While young people embrace the Web with real or virtual friends and their cell phone is never far away, 2relatively few like technology and those that do tend to be in Brazil, India and China, according to a survey.

Only a 9handful think of technology as a concept, and just 16 percent use terms like "social networking", said two combined surveys covering 8- to 24-year-olds published on July 24 by Microsoft and Viacom units MTV Networks and Nickelodeon.

1"Young people don't see 'tech' as a separate entity - 3it's an organic part of their lives," said Andrew Davidson, vice president of MTV's VBS International Insight unit. "4Talking to them about 5the role of technology in their lifestyle would be like talking to kids in the 1980s about 6the role the park swing or the telephone played in their social lives - it's invisible."

The surveys involved 18,000 young people in 16 countries including the UK, U.S., China, Japan, Canada and Mexico.

Terms most frequently used by the young when talking about technology related to 7accessing content for free, notably "download" and "burn".

The 10surveyors found the average Chinese computer user has 37 online friends they have never met, Indian youth are most likely to see cell phones as a status symbol, while one-in-three UK and U.S. teenagers say they cannot live without games consoles."The way each technology is adopted and adapted throughout the world depends as much on local cultural and social factors as on the technology itself," said Davidson. 14For example, the key digital device for Japan's young is the cell phone 15because of the privacy and portability it offers those who live in small homes with limited privacy. According to the survey, Japanese children aged eight to 14 have only one online friend they have not met, compared to a global average of five. Some 93 percent of Chinese computer users aged 8-14 have more than one friend online they have never met. In Davidson's view this was encouraging those aged 8-14 in China to select online over television - a 11trend not seen in any other market in that age group.

The changes in how the youth market engages with technology are 12keenly followed by advertisers and content firms. "Traditional youth marketing considered opinion formers and influencers to be a small elite, but these days the elite has become much larger," said the VBS's vice president.

16For parents 13worried about what their children are getting up to amid the wave of gadgets, little has changed in a generation. The surveyors found the most popular activities the under-14s enjoy were watching TV, listening to music and being with friends. 17The rankings for those older was similar although listening to music was top.

As the 2007 Pan-American Games set for Rio de Janeiro approached, it seemed that everything was 4going the wrong way. Most Rio 2dwellers and Brazilians in general didn't think the city would be able to host this major 3sporting event.

In 2007, besides a rise in crime, air traffic problems escalated almost to a chaotic state, and the structural works for the games fell alarmingly behind schedule. 1__________, in a 5surprising manner, at the opening ceremony at Maracana Stadium, 8it seemed like all the problems had magically vanished.

The late structural works were suddenly solved at the last minute, in the best Brazilian tradition, and the overwhelming majority of events took place peacefully, except for 9a persistent and impolite booing from the spectators towards Americans, Argentineans and anyone playing against a Brazilian competitor.

Rio de Janeiro bade farewell to the 6participating delegations with a taste for 7hosting big events, and an eye at the Olympic Games of 2016. All things considered, the city's homework was definitely 10well done.

It was December - a bright frozen day in the early morning. Far out in the country there was an old Negro woman with her head tied in a red rag, coming along a 1path through the pinewoods. Her name was Phoenix Jackson. She was very old and small and she walked slowly in the dark pine 2shadows, moving a little 6from side to side in her steps, with the balanced heaviness and lightness of a pendulum in a grandfather clock. She 9carried a thin, small cane made 7from an umbrella, and with this she kept 13tapping the frozen earth in front of her. This 10made a grave and persistent 3noise in the still air, that seemed meditative like the chirping of a solitary little bird.

She 11wore a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket: all neat and tidy, but every time she 14took a step she might have fallen over her 4shoelaces 15which dragged 8from her unlaced shoes. She looked straight ahead. Her eyes 12were blue with age. Her 5skin had a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles.

JUST LIKE HUMANS

Animal personality is now taken seriously.

We name them, raise them, clothe them and spoil them. We describe them as manipulative, grumpy, sensitive and caring. And they're not even human - they're our pets. It's in our nature to ascribe human characteristics to animals even if they don't really exist. For this reason, in the interests of remaining objective observers of nature, scientists have taken pains to avoid anthropomorphizing animals. To talk about a dog's having a swagger or a cat's being shy would invite professional sneers.

In recent years, however, evidence has begun to show that animals have personalities after all. Chimps, for example, can be conscientious: they think before they act, they plan and they control their impulses, says Samuel Gosling, a Texas-based psychologist. Research has identified similar personality traits in many other species.

The implications of these findings for research on human personality are powerful. Scientists can look to animal studies for insight into humans the same way they now look to animal testing for insight into drugs. Animal research has already begun to shed light on how different sights of people respond to medications and treatments - aggressive and passive rats respond differently to antidepressants, for example. The hope is that animals can help illuminate the murky interplay of genes and the environment on people's personalities. The research may even lead to predictions about what people will do, based on their personalities, when they're stressed out or frightened. Putting personality testing - already a thriving business - on a firm footing could uncover a wealth of knowledge about where personality comes from.

Assinale a alternativa que contém o uso correto do tempo verbal "present perfect", como no exemplo - "evidence has begun to show that animals have personalities after all" -, no segundo parágrafo do texto.

HERE IS THE SECOND PART OF THE LETTER, WRITTEN BY A 98-YEARS-OLD PENSIONED LADY TO HER BANK MANAGER.

In due course, I will issue your employee with a PIN number, which he/she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modeled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows:

1 - To make an appointment to see me.

2 - To query a missing payment.

3 - To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.

4 - To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.

5 - To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.

6 - To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.

7 - To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the Authorized Contact).

8 - To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through 8.

9 - To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement. Your Humble Client

IPOD'S GROOVY FACTOR

With more than 90 million players sold 9worldwide since its introduction in 2001, the iPod has given rise to a lucrative accessories industry. 1At least 3,000 types of iPod extras have received Apple's blessing - mostly 2no-nonsense options like cases, earbuds and amplified speaker systems, including the $300 SoundDock line made by Bose.

But another trend is developing, 3one more 10playful and not always with Apple's consent or knowledge, Call 4it iSilly, a growing number of products in which fun is emphasized over function. All of these items, some costing as little as $10, have been created to plug into an iPod - or, in many cases, any audio source 5that has a standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack.

Last fall, KNG America released an animated robotic D.J. complete with spinning turntables and stereo speakers that flash with blue L.E.D. lights. Called FUNKit, the 11device, 6which costs about $100, is designed specifically for the iPod. When a player is attached, it becomes the head and upper body of the D.J. that rocks to the music, shouting phrases like "drop the beat," as 7its right arm scratches a faux record.

8"People looked and saw the popularity of the iPod and tried to figure out how to capitalize on it, like those scavenger fish that swim under sharks," said Shelly Hirsch, a toy industry marketing specialist and chief executive of the Beacon Media Group.

Greg Joswiak, vice president of iPod product marketing for Apple, said the 12growing number of products designed to plug into an iPod helps prove that the iPod has become "a cultural phenomenon." "If you look at it from the consumers' standpoint, they have a consumer electronic product that becomes more valuable over time. We're adding these accessories, adding capabilities", he said.

Any speaker accessory that attaches to the iPod by way of the proprietary 30-pin connector in the player's base must be licensed by Apple, he noted. Those that do, including the FUNKit, can usually also permit full control of the iPod through the speaker systems and charge iPods' batteries.

Those that do not, and are not counted as official iPod accessories, are "less interesting," Mr. Joswiak said. 14That judgment has not 13dissuaded toymakers like Lee Schneider, president of the Commonwealth Toy & Novelty Company, a major maker of plush animals and dolls.

"We look at not only the toy business, but what's happening in the world, and the trends in the marketplace, from a fashion standpoint, from a technological standpoint," said Mr. Schneider, surrounded by shelves of 15battery-powered flora and fauna in his company's Manhattan showroom. "We then take and see how we can interpret these trends into fun trends that children and young adults would love to have." [...]
